<p>I receive emails everyday from aspiring lifters all over the world, and one of the most common questions I’m asked is “Do I have to join a gym in order to build a strong, muscular body?” The answer, my friend, is no. With the right equipment and planning you can follow an equally effective bodybuilding program from the comfort of your home without ever having to set foot in a gym.</p>
<p>Maybe you can’t afford a gym membership due to your financial situation. Maybe you lead a busy lifestyle and would prefer to save time by training at home. Maybe you’re simply too embarrassed or uncomfortable to train in a regular gym setting at the moment. Whatever your reason, don’t worry!</p>
<p>Actually, there are a lot of people who think that there’s no better place to workout than their own houses. You don’t waste your time going to the gym and back. All you have to do is walk the stairs anytime you feel in the mood for some exercise.</p>
<p>And working out in your own place have some extra benefits. You can grunt and scream through your sets if you are in the mood without disturbing anyone, the music you hear is the music you want and you can focus in yourself and your training.</p>
<p>When the workout was over, I could sprawl out on the floor in exhaustion and know that my post workout shakes were just a few steps away, and that I wouldn’t have to hobble to my car and spend anymore time driving home. It was great.</p>
<p>Ok, there’s not only good news. It’s almost impossible to have in your home to have certain pieces of machinery such as a leg press or calf machine. And because of that, there’ll be some exercises you could not do there.</p>
<p>The good news is that planning out a proper bodybuilding routine does not require the use of any fancy equipment, and all of the machine exercises that you would regularly perform can be swapped for freeweight substitutions.</p>
<p>Here is the basic equipment that your home gym should contain: 1) An adjustable barbell with freeweight plates. 2) Adjustable dumbbells. 3) A bench with incline adjustments. 4) A chin-up bar. 5) A squat rack.</p>
<p>So there you have it; the 5 pieces of basic equipment that are needed to set up a home gym. As long as you have these basic tools in your arsenal you can perform an equally effective workout without ever having to join a traditional gym.</p>

Straight bars and weight machines are great, but, for the purpose of starting your home gym, with less money being spent, dumbbells are way more cost effective. There is lots of versatility using this type of strength training and you are not limited at all with the wide range of exercises used with dumbbells.</p>
<p>Lifting dumbbells is an excellent way to strength train specific muscle groups by allowing you to place more isolation on the target muscle. You can specifically target biceps, shoulders, chest, and triceps while allowing complete range of motion. You can sit, stand, incline, decline, and even train legs while using dumbbells.</p>
<p>When training with weights it is important to work all angles of your muscle for a three dimensional training resulting in a more well rounded muscle. This can be achieved by rotating the dumbbell at either the top of the movement or the bottom. This rotational movement can not be done with a straight bar or weight machine. When you are able to work without a set range of motion or angle, you use more muscles to stabilize the dumbbell’s weight. This results in a perfect combination of stretch, strength and muscle stabilization.</p>
<p>When working with dumbbells always be conscious of your weight limits and never work past your range of motion limits. If you do, the result could be injury and as a result your goals of whipping your body into shape quickly will be drastically delayed. We certainly don’t need an excuse not to work out now do we?</p>
<p>There are dumbbell training posters you can post to your wall demonstrating proper technique and ideas for specific muscle groups you are targeting. I recommend you get one of these so you will have a better understanding of the various muscles that can be trained effectively.</p>
<p>Dumbbells can now be purchase in a wide variety of weight, size, colors, shapes and covering materials such as chrome, vinyl and neoprene. It is important to find dumbbells that match your training goals and workout intensity. Start out small and then increase the dumbbell weight as you gain strength. However, don’t use weight so light that you are not challenged. If you feel like you pumping air or having to do too many reps before you feel a burn, then your weights are too light.</p>
<p>Dumbbells are relatively inexpensive and ideal for use in your home gym. Strength training with dumbbells is extremely effective in improving muscular strength, endurance and shape while at the same time reducing body fat that collects around the muscles being trained.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The aerobic step bench is the most versatile piece of exercise equipment that I own. Out of all the exercise equipment that I have, including a full weight system, elliptical and a treadmill, I use my Aerobic step bench way more and I paid a fraction of the cost.</p>
<p>I was introduced to step training in the late 80’s, using the step bench for cardio aerobics classes. In 1994 I was introduced to circuit/interval training (bench stepping,) when I was in a video with Gin Miller and Reebok called Step Reebok Circuit Challenge.</p>
<p>Through the process of making that video, I found that my body began to tighten and tone more quickly then ever before. I began to gain lean muscle and nice tight curves. I was hooked on encompassing the Aerobic Step Bench in my workouts.</p>
<p>I have been teaching strength classes for years. My workouts utilize both the bench platform and weights. Believe me when I say, it is 45 minute to 1 hour workout that burns fat and tones muscles faster than any other method I have used.</p>

<p>As I&#8217;m sure you have noticed, home gym equipment isn&#8217;t cheap. When you are looking to invest in something to help you lose weight it is important to know which piece of equipment is most effective at burning off calories.</p>
<p>The two market leaders in terms of number of sales are treadmills and ellipticals, and many people will argue about which piece of equipment is the best. Naturally since you are the person who will be using the machine, you have to come to your own personal decision about which you like best, but there is a definite answer to the argument about which one burns the most calories.</p>
<p>Both machines are able to help you burn the same out calories, depending on how you exercise with them. Working out on an elliptical can burn as many calories as running on a treadmill.</p>
<p>It is true that running on a treadmill can be more intensive, and can have a greater impact on your body&#8217;s muscles and joints. For this reason some people may find it very hard to run on a treadmill. By using an elliptical, you are still able to exercise and burn off the same number of calories, it&#8217;s just the exercise has a gentler impact on your body.</p>
<p>If you chose to run on a treadmill at around 7 mph for an hour, your body would use about 783 calories. Use an elliptical trainer, and you should expect to use up about 774 calories - so the numbers are more or less identical. However, if you only walked on the treadmill at 3 mph, your body would burn just 297 calories, which is a massive difference!</p>
<p>The number of calories your body burns on an elliptical really does all depend on how you use the machine and the approach you take to your workout. Some people prefer to exercise in a moderate, gentle way, whereas others charge in an give themselves a very intense workout.</p>
<p>You really need to ask yourself which machine you would prefer. Remember, you will only do you exercise if you are motivated and excited, if you find it boring to use a treadmill, you are not likely to keep up to your workout regime. Equally, if an elliptical does not inspire you, then you are better off with a treadmill.</p>
<p>For people who love walking, or running or jogging for that matter, then a treadmill would be an excellent investment which allows you to get all the benefits of walking without having to leave your home. Bear in mind though that to be an effective method of losing weight you will have to increase the speed and incline of the treadmill to make sure you really get the benefits of exercise.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve experienced pain in your knees or ankles, or simply want to enjoy a low impact routine, then you&#8217;ll want to choose an elliptical instead. As you age, an elliptical trainer is much more forgiving on your body. Of course some exercise enthusiasts invest in both machines - an elliptical and a treadmill. This lets you mix up your workouts and avoid burnout completely.</p>

<p>Below the surface is a complex of sweat and oil glands, hair follicles, blood vessels, nerves and muscle tissue. These are held together by a tough connective tissue called collagen. Collagen is very important in determining the health of the skin. The relative health of the collagen determines the contour of the skin and how wrinkled and lined it is. Healthy collagen is often called soluble collagen because it can absorb and hold moisture. Below the collagen is a layer of fat and muscle, which provides some contour and acts as a cushion and as insulation. </p>
<p>The skin has three layers. The inner most layer is known as the lower dermis, the middle layer is called the dermis and the outer layer is known as the epidermis. All in all, the skin is truly one of the most amazing parts of the body</p>

<p>Long Term Care and LTC insurance is an important issue for baby boomers, their parents and me. The reality of long term care is at the forefront of our minds because of the news, TV or personal experience. We must ask ourselves what impact an unexpected illness or accident would have on our finances. What is long-term care who needs it and how much will it cost. Before we look at these questions let me share some fun facts about getting &#8220;older&#8221;.</p>
<p>1. Over 40% of all Americans over the age of 65 will spend some time in a nursing home due to a prolonged illness or disability.</p>
<p>2. One year in a nursing home can cost $36,000 to $60,000. Currently, the average cost in a long term care facility in America is $41,000 per year. The average cost of a visit by a home health aide is $52. Daily visits would cost you almost $19,000 per year. Skilled nursing at home, to administer medication or oxygen, for example, five days per week for a year would cost you an average of $94 per visit, or $24,440 per year.</p>
<p>3. Health care plans and Medicare combined pay only about 3% of the costs of long term care. State Medicaid programs rescue only those families who descend to the poverty level. The rest comes out of pocket - nest eggs, funds earmarked for retirement, life savings - or from a long term care insurance policy.</p>
<p>4. In 1983, Medicare began a new program called the Prospective Payment System. Instead of reimbursing hospitals for the actual cost of treating patients, this program now pays a set fee according to 467 Diagnostic Related Groups, or DRGs. Once a patient reaches the arbitrary number of days in the hospital, Medicare payments stop regardless of the individual patient&#8217;s actual condition or the need for continuing care.</p>
<p>5. 70% of people who are older than 65 will need long term care services.</p>
<p>6. 77 million Americans will turn 50 over the next 18 years. That&#8217;s 1 person every 7.5 seconds.</p>
<p>7. 43% of individuals age 65 will enter a nursing home sometime in their lifetime, with 50% staying an average of 2.5 years.</p>
<p>8. The national average cost for 1 year in a nursing home is approximately $41,000; in larger cities from $50 to $60,000 annually.</p>
<p>9. 50 percent of all couples and 70 percent of single persons are impoverished within one year of entering a nursing home.</p>
<p>10. For every person receiving care in a nursing home, there are 4 people receiving care outside a facility.</p>
<p>11. The annual cost to companies for lost productivity from elder care responsibilities is $17 billion a year or $3,142 per employee.</p>
<p>12. By 2020, 1 in 3 workers will be a care giver for a family member.</p>
<p>Most of us would never dream of not having home owners insurance, health insurance (that&#8217;s another issue) or auto insurance. After looking at some of the facts and family medical history, the conclusion seems clear that as baby boomers, we must give this a serious look. The challenge for us is too learn as much as we can about long term care so that we can have options and not be caught off guard by an unexpected illness that could wipe out our retirement or add an undue burden on our families.</p>

<p>Tesofensine: New Miracle Weight Loss Drug?</p>
<p>Weight loss drugs have been something of a flop. Between Acomplia being ordered off the shelves for making people mad, and the lackluster performance of the other popular weight loss drugs - there hasn’t been much to celebrate for the pharmaceutical companies *cue crocodile tears.</p>
<p>That is until now… maybe.</p>
<p>An experimental drug called tesofensine is said to produce double the weight loss of current diet drugs. The drug works on three different appetite regulatory centers of the brain - the neurotransmitters noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin.</p>
<p>The phase II study, reported in The Lancet, included 203 obese patients whose average weight was about 220 pounds.</p>
<p>The average weight loss was 28 pounds in the highest dose of tesofensine compared to the placebo group which lost an average of 5 pounds. Sounds great…until you read the squinty print:</p>

<p>Weight-Loss Pills Lead to Positive Tests</p>
<p>A significant number of NFL players have tested positive under the league’s steroid policy because of their use of weight-loss pills containing a substance banned by the league, sources familiar with the cases said yesterday.</p>
<p>A Denver television station, KDVR-TV, reported six to 10 players tested positive, including tailback Deuce McAllister and defensive end Will Smith of the New Orleans Saints. One to two other Saints players also tested positive, according to the report, which cited an NFL source.</p>
<p>Most of the players, including McAllister and Smith, tested positive for bumetanide, described as a drug used to treat fluid retention. The diuretic reportedly also can be used as a steroid-masking agent and is on the NFL’s list of banned substances. According to the report, bumetanide belongs to a group of medicines called loop diuretics, or water pills.</p>
<p>Sources familiar with the case confirmed the report. The players are subject to possible suspensions, pending appeals.</p>

<p>Walking on a treadmill is by far one of the easiest ways to get in shape. Treadmills are the choice of many beginning exercisers because the machines are so accommodating.  The same machine that you use in the beginning when you are just walking can be the same machine that you are running on months down the road.</p>
<p>People who are serious about walking often choose walking on a treadmill over walking outside. They know how easy it is to procrastinate exercising if they have been forced to forego it for a few days because of bad weather. They know that having their own treadmill takes away any excuse they may have to not exercise, and it enables them to walk when it&#8217;s convenient to them.</p>
<p>One question that many people who start walking on a treadmill have is how much time they should walk. The answer to this question is purely individual based upon your fitness condition. Professionals say that a person should try to walk at least a half hour to an hour at a pace that is at 50-70 percent of their maximum heart rate.</p>
<p>A simple way to calculate your maximum heart rate is to take 220 minus your age. If you are 30 years old, then your maximum heart rate would be approximately 190. Fifty to seventy percent of that would be 95-133. According to the recommendation, you should aim to walk 30 to 60 minutes with your heart rate somewhere between 95-133 beats per minute throughout the entire workout.</p>
<p>However, don&#8217;t let this scare you. Go at your own pace. If you need to, chop up these minutes into two or three segments throughout the day. Just try to exercise as many days of the week as you can and be sure to maintain a heart rate between 50-70 percent of your maximum heart rate during your workout.</p>
<p>The great news about walking on treadmills is that it doesn&#8217;t take long to see results. Before you know it your exercise program will start to become easier and easier. When it does, that&#8217;s the sign to step it up a notch because your maximum heart rate has increased. Keeping your heart rate within 60 to 70 percent of your new maximum heart rate will keep your cardiovascular system and fitness level increasing, too.</p>
<p>Whether you haven&#8217;t exercised in weeks, months or ever-it&#8217;s never too late to start treadmill walking for fitness and weight loss success. Today&#8217;s treadmills are much like personal trainers because they can monitor your heart rate, calories burned, walking speed, distance and more. Whether you walk, jog or run, treadmills can accommodate anyone and help you reach your goals!</p>

It has not only been used to decrease the pain a person is feeling but also for weight control.</p>
<p>In a publication (Warren 2003) there was a statement that &ldquo;Hypnosis is a way to access the untapped power of the mind and alter brain functions. In this state of intense relaxation and concentration the mind is able to focus on positive suggestions which can be carried out at a future time. These subliminal messages are surprisingly powerful.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Then at the 54th Annual Conference in November 2003 of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, Dr David Spiegel (Stanford University researcher) said &ldquo;that although we don&rsquo;t fully understand how it works, there is significant evidence that hypnosis can be effective in helping people reach into their own unconscious resources to solve problems normally beyond their ability&rdquo;.</p>
<p>This in fact shows that the scientific community believes that indeed it is possible for someone to achieve weight loss through hypnosis.</p>
<p>In the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology 1996 a report regarding meta-analysis (comparing multiple studies) showed that adding hypnosis increased weight loss by an average of 97% when people were being treated. But even more important this increased the effectiveness of post treatment by over 146%. So this has shown that hypnosis can work even better if used over longer periods of time.</p>
<p>Whilst in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology 1986 a study was carried out on 60 women and they were separated into hypnosis versus non-hypnosis groups. It was found that those women using hypnosis lost an average of 17lbs whilst those in the non-hypnosis group only lost an average 5lbs.</p>
<p>So as you can see weight loss through hypnosis is very effective and may be more people should look at trying it in the future.</p>

<p>While analyzing samples taken from morbidly obese patients undergoing weight loss surgery, the researchers discovered that substantial quantities of melanin&mdash;a pigment that gives the skin, the hair and the iris of the eye their natural color&mdash;were being produced in the study participants&rsquo; fat tissue.</p>

<p>Cuppa could be a cancer killer</p>
<p>CAN green tea protect against breast cancer, bowel cancer and leukaemia? Australian researchers have been given almost $1million to find out.</p>
<p>The four-year study also hopes to identify the genetic make-up of people who are able to benefit most from certain chemicals, called polyphenols, which are present in green tea.</p>
<p>If successful, the study will add to a growing body of evidence showing green tea with health benefits such as weight loss, lower cholesterol levels and prevention of diabetes.</p>
<p>Professor D&rsquo;Arcy Holman from the School of Population Health at the University of Western Australia said more than 70 laboratory and animal studies worldwide had consistently shown that green tea halts tumour cell growth.</p>
<p>This study hopes to find whether those anti-cancer effects translate to humans, particularly for breast, colorectal and blood cancers.</p>
<p>Raymond Mao imports six types of tea from China and serves them at My Tea House in Neutral Bay.</p>
<p>&ldquo;I sit each customer down for five minutes and tell them which tea is good or not good for different conditions,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a bit like wine tasting, but I do tea tasting.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Once again, the Yarona FM Fat Boy Challenge is back , but this time there is a lady in the mix.</p>

<p>The 2008 leg of Fat Boy Challenge kicked off Monday for a period of four weeks.</p>

<p>Buying exercise equipment may help to get couch potatoes on their feet but they will need more to keep themselves motivated, researchers said.</p>
